Christmas Crack, also known as Saltine Toffee, is a festive and addictive treat that’s perfect for the holiday season. This sweet and salty dessert is easy to make and incredibly delicious, combining the crunch of saltine crackers with a rich caramel and chocolate topping. It’s a crowd-pleaser and makes for a wonderful homemade gift or party snack.

Ingredients

  • 40 saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • Optional toppings: crushed candy canes, sprinkles, chopped nuts

Steps

Prepare the Base:

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line the Baking Sheet: Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer on the sheet.

Make the Caramel:

  1. Melt Butter and Sugar: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter and brown sugar together, stirring constantly. Once it begins to boil, let it bubble for 3 minutes without stirring.
  2. Pour Over Crackers: Pour the caramel mixture over the saltine crackers, spreading evenly.

Bake and Add Chocolate:

  1. Bake: Bake the crackers in the preheated oven for 5 minutes, until the caramel is bubbling.
  2. Add Chocolate Chips: Remove from the oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the hot caramel. Let sit for 2-3 minutes to allow the chocolate to melt, then spread the melted chocolate evenly over the caramel.

Finish and Set:

  1. Add Toppings: Sprinkle with optional toppings like crushed candy canes, sprinkles, or chopped nuts while the chocolate is still warm.
  2. Cool: Let the Christmas Crack cool to room temperature, then transfer to the refrigerator to set completely, about 2 hours.
  3. Break Into Pieces: Once set, break into pieces and enjoy!

Tips

  • Uniform Layer: Ensure the caramel covers all the crackers for an even layer.
  • Storage: Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week or in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.

Variations

  • Dark Chocolate: Use dark chocolate chips instead of semisweet for a richer flavor.
  • White Chocolate: Drizzle melted white chocolate over the top for a decorative touch.

Christmas Crack is an easy and delightful treat that captures the festive spirit of the holidays. With its irresistible combination of sweet and salty flavors, it’s sure to become a favorite in your household. Enjoy making and sharing this simple yet delectable dessert!
